A new team member and a new way of working
"I have just had these wonderful flowers & card delivered and I wanted to say thank you so much, that’s such a kind thought & I will thoroughly enjoy them, they are so beautiful. I’m really enjoying my little role so thanks so much for the opportunity"
I sent these flowers to the newest member of the Hook Home Help team for her birthday. She is a retired nurse looking for some work that fits with her ethos and her current lifestyle.
When we first met she clearly felt concerned about being able to manage the job with her other commitments. We had a great conversation about finding a new way of working that actually works for women, who usually have other caring responsibilities.
I listened to her concerns and to what she wanted to prioritise as well as what she needed to prioritise. She felt sheepish saying she wanted to work around yoga classes but I encouraged her to write down everything she wanted to do and then we found a time that would work around all these things. We need to allow ourselves and each other to work in a way that enables us to enjoy life as well as work.
She started off with two hours of work and extended to three when she felt ready. Each time she was ready for another client, we added one on so she felt in control of her work life balance.
She has complete autonomy over when she sees her clients and manages this all herself knowing that I'm there for support when she needs it.
I'm glad to be able to enable women like this to work in a way that truly works for them. To be able to give people flexibility and autonomy without the stress and sweat.
She is intelligent and hugely capable and I'm grateful that she has chosen to work with me. She enjoys working with people and helping without the grind and the twelve hour shifts that come with nursing. We are so lucky to have her on the team.
