“Life is a collection of stories”

I met a new client this week who said that life is a collection of stories and what is important is sharing each other’s stories and learning from them. This is what I have always thought - that stories and connections are what really matters and what lasts. It felt special to find someone who thinks so similarly. A one hour visit turned into two hours as his story unfolded.

His story took us from the 1930’s through all the important characters and the main events in his life to his painting, his music, his illness and how to help him during the limited amount of time that he knows he has left. People who are living with a life limiting illness can give us real insight into what is important.

We are there to listen to people’s stories, to acknowledge that life can be hard and unfair. Sometimes just being allowed to share their truth and their struggle can make it easier to deal with.

Sometimes people need to be reminded to be kind to themselves. We are allowed to feel angry and sad and pretending that we aren’t can just make life harder.

We encourage people to be kind to themselves and to accept all the support that is available. We will signpost to other services and do what we can to help.

He shed a tear and gave me a hug and we made a plan. This is one story that will be staying with me. We need to remember to make the most of the good times and support each other through the bad times.
