“Wednesday is my favourite day of the week, I don’t know what I would do without you”
Part of my vision for Hook Home Help is to be able to support older people who need some practical assistance, but also to provide flexible part time work which is rewarding and where people feel valued and appreciated for what they do. We always give our clients the whole hour, and often more. We are forming firm friendships and valuable relationships. One of my clients said quietly today, “Wednesday is my favourite day of the week, I don’t know what I would do without you”.
Today I happened to bump into this lovely young lady as she was walking home from one client and I was walking towards another! We stopped for a catchup and a photo on the side of the road. She is working with us for her gap year before heading off to learn to be a midwife. Straight out of college she has been completely reliable and trustworthy, walking to her clients week in, week out. I am proud of my whole team for being so reliable at a time when this is not often the case.
Every client has their own helper. If that helper can’t come for any reason then they are asked if they would like a replacement. Quite often I go in myself so that the client doesn't have to meet anyone new. My aim is to ensure that every client is familiar with more than one helper so that we can cover each other’s holidays and sickness.
I have known this helper since she was skipping around in tiny ballet shoes! I can’t say the same about the others but I have generally known them for many years as we have all been in the village for so long with children, now grown up, but having been to the same schools, or just being in the same place at the same time.
Hook Home Help has come together through a series of wonderful accidents and coincidences and somehow we have formed a team of very special ladies who are genuinely keen to help people in the local community. Every one of us brings a different skill or experience to the team and I am lucky to have all of them. Each one is kind and compassionate and utterly reliable, even the very youngest. One of her clients said to me, “She is a lovely girl and a very hard worker”.
Whatever the client needs, we will find the right helper for them. This has been a wonderful start to the year with happy clients and happy helpers.
