As we were waiting she said, “I am so lucky to have you. You are such a good friend”
This is a very special client. We have been on many trips together over the past few months and I have become very fond of her. We first met when she had fallen over and I was called in to make her lunch and let her daughter know how she was doing. For the first few days we were getting to know each other and the new system but soon she was chatting away and telling me about the whole family and a lifetime of adventures.
As she got stronger, I was needed less but then I was called in to take her to physiotherapy at the hospital. Here we met the loveliest young lady doing her first job after training. She got used to us always coming together and me taking notes on my phone for her daughter and sometimes calling her to answer the questions that we couldn’t. The three of us became a good team.
This young lady was so invested in doing everything right and was amazed at the progress this client made. After many years of doing yoga, she understood the importance of the exercises and did all her homework and made a full recovery.
I hadn’t seen her for a few months but this week I was called in at short notice to take her to the hospital for a small procedure. On our travels to and from the hospital and sitting in waiting rooms we have plenty of time to chat. I love how the conversation flows from the weather to the dog, to her memories of times gone by, to current affairs and world politics. Every time we meet she says how grateful she is for her family, for their love and support and the life she has had. We talk about what we feel is important in life and what life is about.
At the hospital there were a lot of forms to fill in and a lot of questions to answer. There was a lot of waiting and quite a lot of walking. As we were waiting she said, “I am so lucky to have you. You are such a good friend”.
I always message her daughter with all the important information as we go along so that nothing gets forgotten. Today I sent updates and let her know how her mum was doing and what the outcome was.
When I got her home, she gave me a big hug and said she hoped to see me soon.
Her daughter was so grateful and explained that work is so busy that half a day spent at the hospital would have meant working at the weekend.
I was so happy to be able to help these lovely people. To be the person who they can call on when they need an extra pair of hands.
