Hook Home Help has an extra pair of helping hands
Hook Home Help has a new team member. Hannah approached me telling me about how she lives with her Grandmother while she is at university and how she would like to help out over the summer holidays. She is in the same school year as my son and so I messaged all his friends first thing in the morning, asking them all to write their first ever job reference. They all wrote back at different times of the day, with different levels of punctuation. However they wrote it, they all told me how they knew her and that they knew her to be a kind hearted person who would be reliable and good for the job.
Some had known her since primary school or secondary school and they all took the time to think about it and reply. It touched my heart to receive a flurry of messages all through the day, all telling me the same thing, in different ways. So we were already off to a great start.
This week she has been shadowing me, meeting the clients and getting to know who everyone is and what they need. What started out as simple training turned into something special with our first visit. We went to see a lady who has got us in for home help following a long stay in residential care, but really she needs some company and just likes to chat. So on this day we took it turns and one did the chatting and the other got on with the tasks in hand!
Then we set off to the next one and I found that it was a treat for me to have some lovely company and another pair of hands. We made a good team, getting everything done in half the time and providing double the company!
Throughout the summer, she will be working sometimes alongside me sometimes instead of me when I go away. Here we have holiday cover and illness cover with the energy and enthusiasm that come with youth. She is already adding a bit of sparkle to Hook Home Help wherever she goes
