Hook Home Help is helping different people in different ways

This week we had some lovely trips out and about meeting new clients and hearing their stories. One day we met a lady who told us how she remembered life before the M3 and when the M3 was being built. While they were still constructing the road, there was a big ditch that all the children went and played in thinking that no adults could see them. She said that all the children in the village of all ages would call for each other and all go off together to The Big Ditch for an adventure. That was until one day a policeman came along and said that he knew they were there and that it was about to get dangerous with the cars coming. He said he wouldn’t do anything today but if he ever saw them there again, they would be in Big Trouble! She said they waited until he had gone and then ran home as fast as they could and never went back!

Usually we do a free visit before we start working with people so that they can get to know us. Other people like us to get to work straight away. Some people take a while thinking about whether they need the help and by the time we get there, things need doing.

Sometimes we are filling in because the family who have been helping are busy or not well themselves. We will always fit in with people’s families and activities and find a time and day that suits the client best.

One lady we visited for a chat and by the time we left we knew the names of the cats, the children, the grandchildren and the great grandchildren - and some of their cats!

Sometimes it feels like being told a bedtime story - the time flies as we listen to the stories and piece together how everyone fits in. I completely lost track of time listening to how one couple met when she was 18, how he looked after her and then how she cared for him when he was ill and then the loneliness of being on her own even now over ten years since he passed away. A love story that touched my heart.

Hook Home Help is helping different people in different ways. We are changing sheets, cleaning houses, giving lifts, making tea and providing sympathy and kindness. We are hearing about illnesses and the difficulties of old age. We hear about the struggles of losing jobs and the loss identity that comes with that. We are helping people to get meals on wheels, or just taking them to Tesco. We are doing whatever we can to support our clients.

We are always listening to stories and we are treasuring them.

We are currently covering Hook, Odiham, Hartley Wintney, Rotherwick and Greywell. Contact me if you would like to know about what we do
