Hook Home Help teaches Mindfulness to help reduce stress and improve sleep and wellbeing

This week I gave a talk on Mindfulness to the lovely people at the Signals, as part of their wellbeing service. The Signals is the retirement flats next to Tesco in Hook. We have quite a few clients in here and I have got to know their Wellbeing Advisor over the last couple of years as I am in and out all the time.

People who have known me for a while will know that I used to teach mindfulness at Hook Junior school and in businesses including the RAF, Robert Mays and a lot of companies from here to central London.

When I taught the children at the junior school, I did some simple feedback forms after six weeks and my heart was warmed when they said that they had used it to help feel calmer before tests at school, dance exams, football matches and even at their grandparent’s funeral. Some told me how they used it to help their little brother or sister to get back to sleep. Parents used to ask me about it in the playground, in fact it was the parents who encouraged me to train to teach it professionally.

That is how what was supposed to be a small gift of time to the school turned into a life changing career move.

Mindfulness can help to decrease anxiety, depression and stress and will also improve sleep and general enjoyment of life. This can be particularly useful to older people who are often worried about their own health issues and those of family and friends.

Mindfulness can help to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s, improve memory and focus and help us to deal with the strong emotions that come with the changes of aging and with bereavement. It can help us to allow ourselves to rest, to find some calm and feel happier.

This week at The Signals, I was touched by the amount of people who came to the talk and who stayed to chat afterwards. They thanked me very sincerely for coming in and they have asked me to go back and teach them some more.

While I was there we did the chocolate meditation which is always fun. You just eat the chocolate slowly and carefully giving it your undivided attention. Mindfulness makes life easier, sleep better and chocolate yummier.

This is about making very small changes to make life a bit happier which is what Hook Home Help is all about. Sometimes we are giving lifts, making tea and changing sheets. This week we were trying to help people to feel happier in other ways.
