Hook Home Help helps on World Hearing Day

Today is World Hearing Day. Our ability to hear is so important for both our mental and physical health. One in six people in the UK live with hearing loss - it is the most common sort of sensory loss. But how many older people do we know who do not want to admit that they can’t hear you?! How many times do you talk to your older relative and realise that they are pretending to be able to hear you and are mainly guessing at what you might be saying? This can lead to some confusing conversations!

Have you ever asked someone something and have them reply to a different question? There is some shame around not being able to hear but we need to reduce this because hearing loss can have a real impact on people’s lives. Hearing loss increases social isolation and substantially increases the risk of suffering from depression. Recent evidence has shown hearing loss in mid-life is associated with increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

There are some online tools where you can measure your own hearing to see if you might need hearing aids - I have done it. Hearing aids these days are really discreet and work some real magic. You can knock on my mum’s door as loud as you like for as long as you like before she has her hearing aids in and she will be completely oblivious. As soon as she has them in, you wouldn’t know that she ever needed them. She is like a different person.

A few of our clients have had issues with hearing aids and blocked ears. We can book appointments and take people there whenever needed.
