Hook Home Help is helping older people to live happily and healthily, and to stay as independent as possible for as long as possible

Tonight I met this lovely chap, Ray, at The Park gym in Hook. He takes the Recovery Yoga classes. As I was doing this class, I was thinking that one of my clients might enjoy this class and maybe one day she will be well enough for me to bring her down here. Earlier today, I took this client to physiotherapy at the hospital where she was told that it was her commitment to yoga and staying mobile that has helped her recover so well from her recent fall.

The physiotherapist was amazed at the progress she has made and sees that her strength and flexibility is a result of a long term yoga practice as well as her consistency in doing the exercises she has been given. This made me think that more people should know about the classes at The Park that could be really good for older people. There was a lady who was 75 in this class today. She told me that she does yoga twice a week. She told me this by using text on her phone, explaining that Motor Neurone Disease has stopped her from being able to talk but she is grateful that she can still drive and come to yoga. I had made a friend before the class had even started.

This class was so gentle and Ray’s delivery is so relaxing and reassuring, stressing that everyone should leave their ego at the door and work in a way that helps their own body and ignore what others can do. The class was sprinkled with words of wisdom that would be relevant to everyone and every activity.

I know that they are also running strength classes for older people and have seen some amazing progress from people who only started working out later on in life and are now stronger and fitter than they ever have been. What better incentive is there?

I am hoping that my lady who fell might one day make it back to yoga, and if she does, this would be a great place to start. Meanwhile, she will carry on doing her exercises and I will carry on taking her to and from the physio.
