“This is my angel, she has looked after me so well today”

Today someone introduced me by saying, “And this is my angel”. When I had arrived she wasn't feeling quite right so I got a drink for her and her husband and encouraged her to eat some fruit. She's trying to move back upstairs following a period of not being able to manage the stairs. So we decided that the best use of my time was to strip the downstairs bed, change the sheets on the upstairs bed, put the washing on and take as much upstairs as possible so that she wouldn't be tempted to carry things while she was managing the stairs themselves. That was more my thought than hers, she is hoping to be back to normal, but really isn't, and meanwhile everyone around her is trying to prevent her from falling again.

With both partners in their late eighties, it seemed like a good idea to do as much of the manual work as possible in the time available. I ran around putting clothes in the laundry basket, medication upstairs, and brought her phone and tablet to her before she went off to get them!

I think this has definitely contributed to my step count today. Not only have I done a lot of steps, but most of them were going up or down the stairs. These are the jobs that are easy for me but take the weight off older people and keep them safer.

When it was time for me to go, she was feeling brighter and was really happy that things were getting back to normal and going back into their rightful places. When her friend arrived she said, “This is my angel, she has looked after me so well today”.

As I left, her husband came to the door to say thank you and to check that I would be back next week. I reassured him that I would be there every Wednesday, and then he waved to me as I drove away, until I was out of sight.
