Hook Home Help is looking after people in and around Hook. Forming firm friendships and trying to make life easier and happier, and kinder
Today is World Kindness Day. Today the first thing I did was to help someone with some forms. They struggle to understand the forms and they struggle with written English. They were so grateful that at the end they held my hand and said, “I don’t know what I would do without you”.
Then I went to Berry Court to help a lady in one of the flats. She is in her nineties but you would never guess that if you saw her. Once my daughter came to help clean her flat and every time I have been there since then, she remembers to ask after her. And not just casually, as if she really cares and needs to check on her like a grandmother would. It warms my heart.
At lunchtime, I had a phone call with a lady whose mother is not well and might need some help. I often have a few chats with people and answer all the questions before they decide they might want to meet up. I was touched by her concern for her mum. I met her at the home of another client recently and they have all known each for years so that is reassuring for them. They are all looking out for each other.
I visited another lady and did a bit of home help and a bit of chatting about the state of the world. I opened some parcels, made some tea, all the usual things but I know this client well and we know we share the same world views and the same humour so we laughed as we put the world to rights.
This week has been up and down, it started with a bereavement and sadly we lost two more clients this week. Their helpers have been deeply saddened by these losses. We have talked together and reassured each other that sometimes they are in a better place without pain. One of them said often that he wanted to be reunited with his wife who had passed away a few years ago. We have comforted each other and been comforted by the other clients who knew these people.
Then I got home and realised it was World Kindness Day and then I thought that my whole day, and whole week, has been woven with threads of kindness.
