What are we going to get our older people for Christmas? If, like me, all you have under your tree right now is nothing other than maybe a cat plotting how to take the tree down, we all have to have a good think about what to get for everyone. I have spoken to a few older people recently who have said that they don’t want any “things” for the house. A lot of people have downsized and have less space so they are reducing their clutter and don’t need anything to add to what they already have.

One lady has told me that she would just like hand cream and body lotion that she will use every day. My mum is getting a voucher for a pedicure (don’t tell her). I used to always get my granny a manicure because she liked to have nice nails and was sad she couldn’t do them herself anymore. This is also a nice way of supporting local businesses.

Someone else suggested a voucher for afternoon tea. Photo books can be nice for those who live far away, or even one with old photos from the past to help jog memories.

I see some older people don’t tend to replace pillows and bedding. If you have an older person that you will see at Christmas, I find they are always so grateful for a hand with changing the duvet cover which is a workout for even the fittest of us.

I often like to give people shortbread, homemade if I have time. I think everyone needs shortbread at any time of the year. Maybe plants, they can cheer up a space can’t they? We can never have too many green things. And I’m never offended if they don’t survive.

Has anyone else got any ideas we can swap?
