A lovely little review from a lovely client. Her husband has dementia and we go round so that she can go out knowing that he is safe. Carers of people with dementia can apply for 3 hours a week of paid respite care. This lady has decided to top up those payments to get us in so that she is sure to have the same person every week. So we pop in and she pops out.
She is very grateful to have these three hours to herself. She openly says that she is not used to asking for help and has found that hard but now we have a little system where she leaves a list of things that it would be nice to have done around the house, always adding, “only if there’s time”. There is always time.
We do the things that she has suggested and halfway through the morning make a cup of tea for her husband and we have a biscuit and a chat. We talk about the weather and the washing and his siblings and he says that he is doing well for his age. Every week he says that he feels grateful to live in such a nice place. He has visited many countries for work and he knows that there are much worse places to live. We talk about the garden and his family and he always tells me that life is short and we must appreciate what we have. It feels like a gentle reminder every week to appreciate what we have while we have it.
Then he feels tired from chatting and he has a snooze while I finish the jobs in time for his wife to come home and find the house cleaner and some useful jobs done. We have a little chat and each week I get to know them both a bit better. She is so appreciative of having some support that it warms my heart each week.
