Sometimes the small things in life are the big things
“Penny and her team are fantastic, it has given us such peace of mind knowing that our relative has someone regularly checking in and helping where needed. Can’t recommend highly enough.”
We have been visiting this lovely family for a few months and have been with them through some ups and downs and good health and bad. Happily both are now doing really well despite being pretty much 90. Every week we pop in and do whatever is needed.
When we are there we make sure that both have had a cup of tea and a glass of water. Every time she says, “Oh, you do make a good cup of tea, will you have one too?”.
We check how they both are and what needs doing that week. We change sheets, sort laundry, clean the fridge, throw away out of date food, run the hoover round, go to the shops, make tea, let the doctor in, listen to worries that need to be shared and sometimes listen to tales from two long and happy lives. The gentleman tells me, “You are like a ping pong ball, pinging around the house doing everything at once!”.
We try to take things up and down stairs so that they don’t have to. When the cleaners didn’t come, we cleaned as much of the house as we could in an hour. It can be frustrating for people who are house proud to not be able to keep on top of things as much as they did. We try to do whatever is important to them. The lady once introduced me to the nurse as, “her angel”.
They tell us about their family and the grandchildren and who is coming at the weekend. I think that sometimes having a non-family member around can help everyone feel a bit better. The gentleman often says to his wife, “There, you see, you’ve perked up now Penny is here!”.
Each week we send a little message to the family who live further away to let them know how they both are. We share any concerns and any news that comes up.
These are all small things but they mean a lot to the people involved. Sometimes the small things in life are the big things. The cup of tea made just how you want it, the bed made just how you like it. A small note to let you know that your mum or dad is OK.
