“You are so good to me, I am so lucky to have a friend like you”

What we do and who we are to people ranges from those who see us cleaning ladies to those who adopt us as part of the family. With this client, I really feel welcomed into their family. I am always greeted with a hug from the client and a lot of bounces and tail wagging from her dog. On this day the dog ran round and round me in a hundred circles and then brought me her blanket and her teddies and then fell asleep with her head on my foot as if it was a pillow.

It was so sweet! Luckily this trip was more about companionship than anything else so we chatted away until she woke up and wandered off.

I met this lady when she had had a nasty fall and found it very hard to walk. In the early days, I went and made her soup and coffee every day that her daughter was at work. Since then we have been on a series of trips to the hospital for physio and then other appointments.

I help with the forms and remembering things to tell the doctors because sometimes she doesn’t quite remember everything. The last time we were at the hospital she said to me, “You are so good to me, I am so lucky to have a friend like you”. I am lucky to have her too. I love to listen to the stories that start eighty years ago and spread across Europe to South Africa and then back to Hook. I love how she talks so warmly about her family, the ones who live close by as well as the ones who she has lost over the years.

Sometimes she forgets the word she was looking for and sometimes she forgets what she was talking about, but she laughs at herself and it comes back to her. She says, “It must be so difficult for people, being with me, with my silly memory”, but it isn’t, it is always very lovely and very special. I tell her that but I don’t think she ever believes me.

Every time I report back to her daughter, how she is, or what the doctor says and her daughter is so lovely and so appreciative. I am there when they need me and not when they don’t, but I am always happy when I see her name pop up on my phone.

Hook Home Help is fitting in as and when we are needed, however we are needed. We are driving and helping and listening and reporting back. We cover Hook, Odiham and Hartley Wintney. We are making friends with lots of people, and some pets. Contact me if you think we could help you
