Hook Home Helps looks after people on Blue Monday and all year round

Blue Monday is supposed to be the most miserable day of the year. Really, there is no science behind this, but we all know that January can be a time when it is cold and dark and all the fun of Christmas and New year feels a long way away. Most of us have less money and less energy to be visiting friends and family. Some older people, and people of all ages, can be feeling a bit down and a bit lonely.

It can be useful just to reflect on the fact that this can be a difficult time for everyone. It might be a good day to pop in on an older family member or neighbour, or just give them a ring. It can be a good time to remember to look after ourselves and each other.

We can all feel better by doing some simple things that don’t cost anything. Making connections with other people can make both parties feel a bit better. It doesn’t have to be a lot of time, it can be a phone call or a message saying that we are thinking of the other person.

We can feel better if we move a bit and get outside for a bit. We could combine that by doing it with another person, or not. Whatever works for you.

It is time to be kind to ourselves and each other. Time to allow ourselves to rest and to reflect on what is going well. The brain gets good at what it practices most. Brains that tend to worry, will just worry more. Many older people feel worried about their friends and family and have little to take their mind off things. We can all help ourselves by being aware of what we are thinking and focussing on the positives.

Let's remember to check in with ourselves and each other today. Let’s say thank you to someone who has helped us or taught us something. Let’s focus on what we have to feel grateful for.

“Mum was so happy after you left. Thank you for your time, I know we both talked a lot. I think it was partly due to the relief that Mum felt and the fact that you were both so kind…”
